Curating the Perfect Tablescape

Updated: 5 days ago

Autumn is the perfect time for hosting. Whether it’s an intimate Friendsgiving indoors or a daytime backyard party to soak up the last of the sun, there is nothing that gets me in the hosting mood more than dreaming up the details. That is until that dream has a dedicated pinterest board and all of my friends have an e-vite in their inbox. Suddenly, I realize (as much as I wish it weren’t true) we’re not all Martha Stewart. So much goes into hosting the perfect event that it can sometimes—or more accurately, does—feel overwhelming.

What is the most time-efficient but gourmet appetizer?

How can I avoid awkward pauses in conversation?

Who sits next to who?

What side does the cutlery go on?

Unfortunately, I’m still trying to find answers to those questions myself (except that last one—it’s the left). Something I can help with, however, is curating the perfect tablescape that will steal the show and leave your guests with nothing but great things to say (even if you burn the meal).

My qualifications? An Eastern European mother who has always gone all out for events, and a design degree that I can sort of, kind of, bend and fold and pretend relates to my knowledge of aesthetics. Trust me? Let’s get started.

Define the Vibe

The first thing to focus on when designing your tablescape is the vibe of your event. A barbecue in your backyard probably doesn’t call for crystal. Close your eyes and picture your event.

Where are you? What’s the temperature?

What are your guests wearing?

What’s the lighting like?

What can you hear?

This is how you define the atmosphere—and your tablescape should reflect it.

This fairy-esque garden party is the perfect example. It's lush, magical, and intimate!

Build a Strong Foundation

Start with your base: a tablecloth, runner, or placemats. This layer sets the mood instantly. Crisp white linen feels timeless, bare wood feels organic and rustic, while bold colors or textured fabrics add personality and drama.

Play with Layers

Dinnerware doesn’t need to be matchy-matchy. In fact, a mix of styles often feels more interesting. Try layering vintage plates with modern chargers, or keep things simple with a restrained palette where texture does the talking. Glassware and cutlery can add subtle sparkle or a statement finish—think brushed gold, smoky glass, or jewel tones.

Your local thrift will almost certainly have some pre-loved dinnerware to play with.

Craft a Centerpiece

The centerpiece is your anchor. Flowers are a classic, but don’t stop there—candles, seasonal fruit, greenery, or sculptural pieces all create visual impact. Just remember: your guests should be able to see over it.

This is the time to include some thematic or seasonal touches!

Add Personal Touches

This is my favourite part. This is where you get to have fun. Handwritten place cards, tucked-in herbs, a small keepsake, or unique napkin folds make guests feel considered. These details are what take your table from pretty to memorable.

Who says kids are the only ones who get to draw on tables? Butcher paper or brown craft paper is the perfect customizable tablecloth! Let your guests make it their own.

Balance & Flow

Think in terms of rhythm: tall elements (candlesticks, vases) paired with low ones (plates, greenery), with enough negative space left to keep things comfortable. A well-balanced table invites people in rather than intimidating them.

Mix and match your favourite items!

Don’t Forget Ambience

Finally, lighting seals the deal. Candles, string lights, or even a simple dimmer switch will transform your setup. Pair with a playlist that matches your theme, and suddenly your table is more than a place to eat—it’s an experience.

Pro tip: Candles of varying heights also are great for adding visual interest as a part of your centerpiece!

Remember, your tablescape doesn’t need to be flawless. It just needs to feel like you. If your table tells the story of your gathering—whether it’s casual, glamorous, or somewhere in between—you’ve already nailed it.
